Formula Student
Introduction

This section of our website has come about as a result of the increasing number of requests we have from universities for motorcycle products to be used in the construction of Formula Student cars.
Moto-racing.co.uk is now pleased to be able to offer support for Formula Student and Formula SAE and has over the past few years supplied a number of teams with discs, chains, sprockets and other equipment .
A special discount rate is available to Formula Student teams to help keep costs to a minimum, contact us for more information.
We are a performance motorcycle parts specialists and therefore not able offer technical advice other than on the parts we supply. However many of our suppliers are engineering companies and in some cases can supply custom parts or modify existing designs to suit your purposes.
Below are details of the most commonly requested equipment together with some hints which should cover the most basic information.

Formula Student

Sprockets
As Formula Student invariably uses motorcycle engines we can supply front (or gearbox) sprockets to suit all motorcycles with a number of teeth options and as well as narrower sprockets to accomodate a smaller lighter chain.
Rear sprockets - As well as supplying standard fitment rear sprockets we can also supply blank sprockets, for you to finish off yourself, or Renthal custom made sprockets (We can supply almost any rear sprocket to pattern, drawing or from accurate dimensions).

Example Costs -
520 chain size (5/8 x 1/4 inches)   525 chain size (5/8 x 5/16 inches)   530 chain size (5/8 x 3/8 inches)
Blank* Finished**     Blank* Finished**     Blank* Finished**
29 to 46 teeth £16.61 £28.36   33 to 46 teeth £21.75 £33.50   29 to 43 teeth £23.01 £34.76
47 to 51 teeth £18.55 £30.30   47 to 51 teeth £23.88 £35.63   44 to 46 teeth £26.27 £38.02
52 to 60 teeth £20.72 £32.47   52 teeth £25.63 £37.38   47 to 51 teeth £29.07 £40.82
62 teeth £20.72 £32.47           52 to 60 teeth £33.53 £45.28
                62 teeth £33.53 £45.28
All costs include VAT and are prior to any discount given.

* All blank sprockets are made from aluminium alloy (spec. 7075T6) and have a 1.5 inch (38mm) centre hole.
** Finished sprockets are bored, drilled, lightened where possible and recessed if necessary. (Finished sprockets are also made from aluminium alloy (spec. 7075T6), can be anodised black, blue, gold, red or hard (bronze) at an extra cost of £7.05).

Chains
From a performance only perspective the best the best chains would be the special race chains, these are lighter in weight but have a higher tensile strength than standard road chains and have low friction X-Ring seals. From a budget point of view we can supply any DID or Tsubaki road chain in any length, if you require something longer than usually found on most motorcycles we can cut lengths from a 25ft roll.

Brake Discs
Like rear sprockets we can supply brake discs to pattern, drawing or from accurate dimensions. Prices vary between £57.00 to £85.00 inc. VAT for a solid (non floating) disc depending on whether it is a stock disc or a completley custom disc.
These discs manufactured by ISR Sweden are cut from a solid steel alloy bar and not sheet metal. This increases strength and rigidity, making the rotor less susceptible to warping and cracking. The material the rotor is made from has the same friction properties as cast iron, helping you to stop quicker, but is slightly lighter and not as brittle. The coating applied to prevent corrosion wears off after a few miles. The rotors are drilled to make them lighter and also to help heat dissipate. They also provide an escape route for gas and brake dust which, if allowed to built up between the disc and pad, can reduce braking efficiency.
ISR also manufacture brake calipers to suit there discs.
